The primer is the first layer of colour that is applied on the model in order to prepare the surface for the subsequent painting processes. In order to guarantee an excellent adherence it is necessary to apply it on a previously ‘degreased’ surface, therefore it is advisable to wash the model or the figure before priming it in order to remove the remains of release agents.
Vallejo Primers is a range of acrylic primers specially formulated for airbrushing. Recommended compressor settings for our colours are around 15 – 20 PSI or 0.5 to 1 kg.
The primers are applied in successive coats and dry quickly, forming a homogeneous film of extraordinary hardness and resistance within a few hours after application. They can be used directly or diluted with our Airbrush Thinner (B002X6DTHK) or Flow Improver (B00QD780G0).
The grey primer is available in 18 ml (0.6 fl. oz.) bottles with dropper, and 60 ml (2.02 fl. oz.) and 200 ml (6.76 fl. oz.) bottles with hinged cap and dropper.
Note: The brand Vallejo is currently in the process of rebranding, therefore, for a period of time, it is possible that you may receive the product with either the new packaging or the old packaging.

Customers say

Customers appreciate the primer’s quality, ease of use, and color accuracy. They find it works well with brushes and airbrushes, providing a good base and adhesion. The gray color looks good, though some customers mention it’s lighter than Games Workshop plastic. They also like the coverage and smoothness. However, opinions differ on value for money, quality, and thickness.

Good value and results for airbrushing.
I tried airbrushing this product on GW plastic models and some BattleTech models from CGL.The product sprayed out nicely once I got the airbrush dialed in. I used a single action external mix siphon feed airbrush at about 25-30 psi. I probably could’ve gone lower pressure, depending on the mix (as mentioned below).I experimented a bit with adding in some thinner to the mix at about a 1:2 thinner to paint ratio. It didn’t seem to need the thinner to work though, and I was able to get a good stream by using the straight product too.I take this as a good thing, as it doesn’t need thinner but it plays well with that if you want or need to thin it. It might be nice if you want to do a very thin coat.Adhesion was not a problem, though by test spraying it I could see that it was kind of runny if there was just too much paint in the mix. That was fixed by adjusting the airbrush. The grey is quite like the Corax White spray from GW. It really looks quite white unless you have a pure white against it. This isn’t a drawback, but it does seem to make this more suited for lighter color schemes than darker ones.Overall, I would recommend this to anyone with an airbrush and a lot of models to prime. While $20 for 200ml isn’t super cheap, the amount of priming (and quality priming at that) this bottle can do really blows away the canned competition. You need to have the right gear and sufficient project to justify this, but I don’t think it is a purchase anyone will regret.

    Works as described!
Works well with a large tip nozzle straight out of bottle. PSI set at 40 and do light strokes. Used colored acrylics following and model looks great.

    instructions say for airbrush
This can be used for regular brushing, which is what I’m going to do (after mixing it slightly with distilled water to reduce bubbles). It’s really thin, designed more for airbrushing from what I can tell.

Made for airbrushing, can also be applied manually
This is a great primer. What the bottle doesn’t say is that it’s made for airbrushing, until you read the directions for use.I don’t have an airbrush, so I applied this by hand. It is a primer and not a base coat. What I mean by that is that when you’ve finished applying one or two coats, this will stay a little sticky until you paint over it. You do not want to leave this exposed for a gray paint color, you absolutely need to paint over it.It does a very good job covering, and I haven’t had to put more than two coats on anything yet.It helps the paint hold on to the surface. This will be my go-to primer from now on.I also found that it covers easily and I needed to use less of it than I expected, so this bottle will likely last me quite a while.

    AMAZING primer!
I jumped on a bottle of this Vallejo Gray primer as soon as I saw the largest size on sale for $10.00. Man, what a STEAL! I had heard good things about this primer but already had plenty of Rust-Oleum gray primer in a rattle can that had served me well up to that point. But I was looking for an acrylic primer so that I could use it indoors with my airbrush. This stuff couldn’t fill that bill any better! It applies very easily with a 1-1 ratio of thinner to primer, and I also add a drop or two of Vallejo Flow Improver and a drop of Vallejo Retarder Medium as well, just like I do with a lot of their colors. The smell is slightly sweet but not unpleasant, and a whole lot more acceptable than lacquer or enamel paints. It dries very quickly and is very durable. I also bought some of the black Vallejo primer but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I’m totally sold on this Vallejo line of paints, washes, and primers. They’ve made getting back into modeling a real pleasure!

I primed several citadel miniatures and it works great! The only thing is it’s so light coloured you have to treat it as a white primer- the colours came out extremely vibrant, which might not always be desired. I plan to mix it with the black primer to make something closer to mechanicum grey next time.
