The primer is the first layer of colour that is applied on the model in order to prepare the surface for the subsequent painting processes. In order to guarantee an excellent adherence it is necessary to apply it on a previously ‘degreased’ surface, therefore it is advisable to wash the model or the figure before priming it in order to remove the remains of release agents.
Vallejo Primers is a range of acrylic primers specially formulated for airbrushing. Recommended compressor settings for our colours are around 15 – 20 PSI or 0.5 to 1 kg.
The primers are applied in successive coats and dry quickly, forming a homogeneous film of extraordinary hardness and resistance within a few hours after application. They can be used directly or diluted with our Airbrush Thinner (B002X6DTHK) or Flow Improver (B00QD780G0).
The matt black primer is available in 18 ml (0.6 fl. oz.) bottles with dropper, and 60 ml (2.02 fl. oz.) and 200 ml (6.76 fl. oz.) bottles with hinged cap and dropper.
Note: The brand Vallejo is currently in the process of rebranding, therefore, for a period of time, it is possible that you may receive the product with either the new packaging or the old packaging.

Customers say

Customers find this primer works well for them. They find it easy to apply with a brush or airbrush, and the paint flows smoothly and evenly. The coverage is great, consistent, and thorough.

    Great primer
My husband is a total Vallejo fin boy. His hobby is 3D printing and then painting various models. He loves Vallejo paints and primers and that is all he uses. The primer works straight out of the bottle in his airbrush with no thinning needed and provides great coverage.

Perfect out of the bottle no thinning required
After running into problems with other colors of primer I was a hit hesitant to try this one but decided to give it a go as I do like the Vallejo paint. Once I loaded this up into the airbrush I was pleasantly surprised to see the paint Flow easily with no problem and no clogging at all during my session. I was able to cover a particularly large piece and the coverage was great, it adheres perfectly to plastic. Best thing was I didn’t need to add anything to it so it was a really easy process. Additionally I was able to use a brush with the primer (wanted to test it out) and still worked out fine. Would definitely recommend!

    Works well
It sticks to my minis perfectly and the coat allows for the finer details to still remain. Overall a great primer.

    Did everything I wanted perfectly
Ran this through an Iwata Neo airbrush and it works wonders. It’s a very dark black, and didn’t need to be thinned very much. Very good airbrush primer very nice to use

Great coverage and adhesion to plastic
I received an airbrush kit for Xmas. Vallejo primers work great with it. After tweaking the psi, and trial and error, I was able to prime a dozen miniatures with ease in 30 minutes.Although the bottle states it’s airbrush ready, I did find that cutting the primer 50/50 with Vallejo airbrush thinner works much better than straight primer alone. No tip dry with the 50/50 mix, whereas I had to clean the needle repeatedly with the straight primer. It’s a good idea to grab thinner if you’re going to use this with an airbrush.Even though it’s designed for airbrushes, the primer can also be brushed on if you don’t have one. Either way it beats using rattle cans to prime and varnish. I will be buying the white and grey primers, and a matte varnish from Vallejo as well.

    Works great
No need to dilute it, ready to go just give it a shake, poured it into your airbrush or can be brushed on. Does have a smell not strong but is noticeable, always wear a face mask when airbrushing and gloves. Haven’t had any issues, no cracking or peeling, just make sure to prep what your going to prime. The black color goes on shine but drys matte. Goes on smooth, when brushing might have to do two to three layers.

    It Does The Trick
It’s just primer. It does the job fine. Good coverage, quick drying, and a good surface to paint over. Can’t go wrong for priming minis.

Works quickly and has great results
I’d been using a white spray on primer but heard this was good and decided to try it out. You have to paint it on thick, but once fully on the miniature, it only takes 20-30 minutes to dry before you can start painting. The effect makes adding shadows much easier, and it felt like the quality of my minis went up immediately. I still use the white primer for really light minis, but for most others I use this.

I’ve been sold on Vallejo products for awhile now, but this was the first time that I used their primer. As expected it was uniform in consistency, had great coverage potential and provided an excellent base for future painting. My experience was with birch plywood specifically for reference.
