A slow-burning masterwork of the early 1990s, this third feature by Charles Burnett is a singular piece of American mythmaking. In a towering performance, Danny Glover plays the enigmatic southern drifter Harry, a devilish charmer who turns up out of the blue on the South Central Los Angeles doorstep of his old friends. In short order, Harry’s presence turns a seemingly peaceful household upside down, exposing smoldering tensions between parents and children, tradition and change, virtue and temptation. Interweaving evocative strains of gospel and blues with rich, poetic-realist images, To Sleep with Anger is a sublimely stirring film from an autonomous artistic sensibility, a portrait of family resilience steeped in the traditions of black mysticism and folklore.

Quiet and Thoughtful Gem
Charles Burnett captured the rich legacy and lore of a Black family’s life across generations. The film is a quiet and thoughtful depiction of the tension in a family between tradition and progress, religion and magic, nostalgia and reality, and how tenuous their collective bonds are under individual pressure. It’s beautifully and powerfully acted, and full of quips, one-liners, and references to Black experiences of long ago to tell a family story that is both ordinary and extraordinary.

Great Film
A great movie, that I honestly had never heard of till Criterion released it. In fact I count it as a favorite now. Danny Glovers performance is stellar, as are all of the actors involved , but he definately stands out. Not because its Danny Glover, but because he really embodies the character and does an incredible job , as a distant friend or relation to a black , southern California family, just arriving from the south, and causing all kinds of turmoil soon after. The film deals with cultural differences within the black community , and between the states. Old ways, and the here and now, with a little hint of southern folk traditions , and magic.I recomend for film lovers in general, and especially those looking for good drama that comes from the black community, and does not rely on stereotypes, but actual human beings. As for the picture quality, criterion always does a great job with presentation, but in the case of this film, I’m not sure there is that great of a difference between the blu ray, and dvd , to warrant spending much more. Although I’m not an expert on film grade , or aspect ratio or other things people with more knowledge often speak of, I feel like the film has a grainy quality that is more prevalent in certain scenes. My first assumption is that it has to do with whatever film was used for the original print. I have this both on Blu ray, and DVD. I upgraded when I finally got the player, but am finding that not all films benefit from blu ray.Any way, great film. You choose the format

A long time coming
I had this movie on VHS many years ago and having been waiting for it to come on DVD. Not only is it on DVD it is on blu ray and has been given the criterion collection treatment. This is my second attempt to review this video. Somehow my first attempt ran afoul of Amazon standards. How, I have no idea. If this one runs afoul I will know why. it will be because I criticize them for the first one. AM giving it the same 5 star as last time and making the same comments as I remember. This is one of my favorite films. It is a ” Quite film” There is a sense of foreboding in the very opening and there is evil afoot. Not in the ways we are accustomed. A quite evil you invite into your home and that senses divisions and makes it’s humble contribution. No real goal other than to do what it does best. The kind of film you watch and then discus with others. Not in the wiz bang special effects kind of way but the thought provoking way that makes you want to ask the other person ” So what do you think of the Danny Glover Character.Danny gives a masterful performance as Harry . I want to say more about the cultural nuances of the film but I am not sure if that got my last review rejected.

This movie is rare Gem that focusses on events of the unseen
Me and my mother really enjoyed this film. When watching we were coming in blindly having no idea or realization as what to expect. Yet due to Danny Glover and some of older actors from 70s & 80s television I knew that we would find the work enjoyable. This film talks about the unseen energy that flows all around us everyday and how one old man infringes his evil spirit to take hold of a peaceful household, and almost completely breaks the family into ruin. I never seen a topic like this before that shown with such subtlety, vivid spiritual emotions, and passion underneath the surface of all these characters.

Good film/offbeat Danny Glover performance
Good/interesting character study. Danny Glover portrays the house visitor from hell, who creates havoc within a middle class black family.
