What an interesting twist on this well known genre.
Spoiler alert:I figured out some of the plot twist, but not the last bit. That is a rare and refreshing experience. This is my first viewing, but I am almost completely sure of the overall plot line. She wasnât a witch, but she did have extra sensory powers, mainly the ability to compel the physical bodies of others to act against their will, and/or cause them to hurt themselves. She has flashbacks of an incident involving an argument with her father, where she tells him about a woman who saved her from a fall. That this woman lived under the waterfall and that she gave her a gift. The gift was a pentagram made from sticks. I think that this was a red herring. Meant to make the viewer to conclude that she was chosen by the devil. She then becomes very angry from their fight, and like a petulant child she is, tell her father that she wished he was dead. Except, unlike any other teenage brat, she actually unknowingly had the power to make it happen. He dropped dead as soon as she spoke the words. This I believe caused her to stop speaking almost completely.I think that she was born with the latent powers, and that her traumatic experience of her mother torture and dying after being wrongly accused of witchcraft, as well as they way she was further persecuted by the superstitious villagers, that caused her to actualize her mostly dormant ability. The fact that she wasnât actually evil, or in communion with the devil, but still possessed her powers means that her otherworldly skill set was independent of the concept of the governing beliefs of her time. The story was about what would happen if such a person were subjected to extraordinary hardship and trauma. Like she told the priest as he was dying from the knife wound she inflicted: The devil didnât make me, you did.I love mind bendy types of movies. I am so pleased that I happened to find this little gem.

It was a good movie to enjoy
I wanted to give 5 stars but couldn’t. It had some great performances and outstanding costumes. Story was strong but that may have been it’s weakest point. Otherwise. a great watch. The young lady who was the star, did outstanding as did the bit part by the woman she rescued at the end.Get so popcorn and enjoy it

How is this 4 stars?
I saw the 4 star rating so I thought I’d give this a chance. I kept waiting for it to get good, It never rose above a 1 star. I would say there are better ways to spend your time than watching this.

Wrong description
You have the wrong description for this movie. The description you posted is for the movie called “The Reckoning” This one should be :”Set in a small isolated village in 14th century Wales, Alice is a sixteen year old girl who is accused of being a witch and causing the plague that has ravaged the village, taking the lives of many, including Alice’s own father. When it is revealed that Alice has been hiding her mother’s infection, she is forced to watch The Cleanser, an ominous masked figure, brutally dispatch her mother. The town preacher and de-facto leader Tom has eyes for Alice, and subjects her to five torturous trials after she spurns his advances. Escaping the night before her execution, with the help of her mother’s friend Mary, she flees into the forest and discovers the secluded hut of a mysterious healer, with his own troubled past and demons to face. He nurses her back to health, and teaches her how to exact revenge upon those that persecuted her.

We canât all like the same things, can we? I rarely comment on other reviews, but I am sorry to see such negativity directed toward âThe Cleansingâ â especially as the slow-burning nature that repels some people is exactly the reason I like it so much. That and the fact that it is well made, beautifully shot and very powerfully played.A kind of cross between a 14th century âI Spit on your Grave (1978)â and âWitchfinder General (1968)â, this story finds wayward teenager Alice (a great performance from Rebecca Aycock) spurning the advances of Priest Tom (Rhys Meredith). Humiliated, he does his best to convince the small village that the girl is a witch and as such, has to undergo gruesome torture to prove her innocence (or not). Right there we have another example of an alleged man of the cloth using his position to behave in a most ungodly way. But he is not a monster, just a weak, pathetic man whose spite takes things beyond his control.Alice is an enigma, played with real gusto. That she does not speak for a sizeable portion of the story makes it hard for the audience to decide if she entirely innocent, which is a decent red herring. Not so successful is the arrival in the midst of events, of a stranger (Luke Bailey). He comes and goes without ever affecting the storyline.Aliceâs journey is a slow-burner, but by the third act, enters into satisfying horror territory. Never overtly graphic, the scenes of violence and gore are successfully employed, and the characters â even the minor ones â are interesting enough for us to be invested in their (often grisly) fate. The title character is a good, powerful-looking monster, and he proves himself to be far more than the brooding killer you might expect him to be.Kudos to all concerned at High Fliers Films for this good-looking folk-horror project. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My score is 8 out of 10.
