Goodbye Norelco after 25 years!!
I bought my first Norelco in 1994 and loved it. Some years ago, I replaced it with a model 8240XL and also loved that one too. Both cut very well and the batteries seemed to run forever. On an impulse, I bought a model S8950 a couple of years ago, because the advertising depicted the swivel head as the greatest invention since the TV remote. This new shaver turned out to be a great disappointment. The cut was awful and after a while, the head fell apart and I had to replace it. The cut from the replacement head was so bad that I decided to buy a new head for my old 8240XL. The new head arrived and low and behold, the cut was even worse than the newer model S8950. I have now come to the conclusion that a senior bean-counter at Phillips Norelco has discovered he can save a few pennies by out-sourcing the blades to a cheap maker and the result is that the quality is now awful. So, buyers don’t be persuaded by the reputation of Norelco and older reviews. Look at the current reviews and you will see what I mean. So far as I am concerned, Norelco’s reputation is now dead. For me, changing from Norelco was a bit like a change of religion, but I carefully researched the reviews on various brands and models and it came down to either the high-end Braun 7 Series, or the Panasonic Arc 5. In the end, I bought the Panasonic Arc 5 and I am amazed at the incredible cut this shaver gives me. It appears to be well-made and I can now get a very close shave after just a couple of minutes. Love it and my skin feels like it has had a very careful wet shave. I have only used the shaver so far in dry mode. The latest fad is for high-end shaver manufacturers to offer cleaning stations. I bought this model without the cleaning station and I am absolutely convinced that the cleaning station would be a waste of space, money and time. Why complicate a daily chore? The instructions for the non-cleaning station version, that I bought, don’t mention the cleaning station at all. Instead, the instructions state to squirt a little liquid hand cleaner and water on the head and then to run the shaver. The result is that a little foam starts exuding from the head and after a 10 seconds or so, I remove the head (easy) and rinse it and briefly dry it. The whole cleaning episode takes maybe 60 seconds.Maybe, after some period of time, I will have to replace the head, but no drama and not very expensive. As a sales and marketing professional, I can tell you that every maker of long-lasting products dreams of offering a product where the purchaser has to continuously buy refills, cleaning packs etc. (Hence printers and vacuum cleaners and expensive fridge filters). If you buy this Panasonic with the cleaning station, you will need to buy packets of cleaning chemicals. If you buy the Braun, you will have to buy expensive cleaning cartridges. Don’t waste your money on those gimmicks, they may work, but in my opinion, are completely unnecessary.UPDATE 5/15/2019I have used this shaver for 2 months now and it is absolutely the best shaver I have owned and used in 50 years. I find the speed I shave is much faster than ever before. A few light strokes over an area and my skin is like a baby’s bottom (without the smell!). With my previous Norelcos, I used to pound away with shaving cream and the result was nothing like this Panasonic. I did not buy the cleaning station and it is absolutely unnecessary. A quick squirt with liquid hand soap and 10 seconds running cleans it 100%, followed by a quick rinse in warm water. The Norelco is a classic example of a bean-counter buying cheaper components and ruining what was the Rolls Royce of shavers and companies, like Panasonic, quickly jump in and take over the business.UPDATE 11/25/2019I have now used the shaver every day for the past 8 months and I can not praise it enough. In all my many years of using electric shavers, I have to say that this is absolutely the best of all of them all. Even after 8 months, it appears to be as sharp as when it was new. I did not buy the gimmicky cleaning kit and instead, put a few drops of hand washing liquid on the blades a couple of times a week and then run the shaver and the soap bubbles and removes any residues. I have tried using the shaver in the shower a few times, with shaving foam and the result is my skin feels as smooth as a baby’s bottom. However, using the shaver dry does give an almost similar shave.UPDATE 5/14/2020I noticed that after 15 months, the shaver still works very well, but has lost its initial amazing performance. It still gives a very good shave, but I have ordered a replacement foil/blades set, as I want it to deliver its original fantastic shave. Leaving it longer would be like running a Ferrari on regular gas when that incredible performance is only available with Super, if you see what I mean?

Using the Panasonic Arc5 after 10+ years using a Braun 8985
I bought this Panasonic Arc5 shaver after 10+ years of daily use of a Braun 8985. Here is my comparative experience after two weeks with the Panasonic. The Braun was a well-designed, durable, and effective shaver. I retired it because (1) the fluid cleaning system had broken years since (itâs expensive to replace), (2) the shaver motor was becoming progressively louder, and (3) the battery would hold a charge for only two to three days. (Replacing the battery requires the use of a soldering iron. I still considered having it professionally done, but the cost of that, plus worry about the remaining lifespan of the motor, plus the high replacement cost of a cleaning system made doing so impractical.)I chose the Panasonic Arc5 without a cleaning system. I believe such systems are less reliable than the shavers themselves, their consumable supplies are expensive, and it makes less sense to spend big bucks for a dedicated cleaning system when the Panasonic can easily be washed under the faucet. More on this later.Shaving â I had been using the Braun with a foil and cutter blade that had been replaced about eight months earlier. But from the first shave, it was evident that the Panasonic is superior to the Braun in its shaving ability. The foil shaving surface is much nearer to square shaped compared to the Braun, which makes it more comfortable to use and less likely to irritate my skin, and the blades cut better and closer based on my ability to feel stubble after use. I have a couple of difficult spots on my neck that are better handled by the Panasonic by a significant margin.Ergonomics (feel) â The Braun has superior ergonomics in terms of the feel and grip of the shaver in my hand. It fits the hand perfectly and all operating surfaces â the on/off button and trimmer â work effortlessly. The on/off button operates so smoothly I sometimes switch it on and off just for the feel of it. The Panasonic is good in this respect, but the Braun is superlative.Charge indicators â The Braun has colored indicator lights that I believe signify the shaverâs charging status. But theyâre small and, being colorblind, Iâve never paid much attention to them. The Panasonic has a large, illuminated LCD readout that clearly states the percentage of charge remaining. It also shows elapsed time spent shaving, and I believe it has other indicators too that I havenât yet noted. The Panasonicâs display is far more useful than the Braunâs cryptic blinking lights.Trimmer â Iâm bearded, so a trimmer is important to me. The Braun has a much wider trimming blade that also feels more secure in operation. The Panasonicâs trimmer is slightly more visible when being used. Otherwise, the trimmers on both shavers are equal in performance, although I have a slight preference for Braunâs.Cleaning â When the Braunâs cleaning system worked, it was almost effortless. After time, some residue would build up in the cleaning device itself which required periodic attention. Without a working cleaning system, I found the Braun annoying to clean. There are quite a few tight spots where stubble would gather, requiring some vigorous brushing and picking. I finally resorted to a can of compressed air that, while messy, got the job done quickly and well. The Panasonic without a cleaning system is superior in this regard. Itâs a wet/dry shaver that can be cleaned under running water. Iâve posted a photo of Panasonicâs cleaning instructions. It really does work that way. Since I had several leftover Braun cleaning system refills, I emptied their contents â sort of an oily disinfectant with a faint fragrance â into a plastic squeeze bottle and now squirt that onto my Panasonic blades for cleaning every few days. Then I run it under the faucet for a while to clean the blades and set it out to dry on a paper towel. After it dries thereâs still a little stubble residue that needs to be wiped off with the paper towel. In summary, if this Panasonic Arc5 shaver holds up as well as the Braun over time, I’ll be very happy. Based on shaving performance alone (your face may vary), it’s a much better solution. Otherwise, there are some trade offs either way, and both can get the job done effectively.P.S. I did not consider buying a Norelco, even though Iâve used them in the past. I think the tri-rotor design is a less desirable solution for a bearded person. Theyâre otherwise a good alternative, but I havenât used once since before the Braun so I canât offer a comparison.

Panasonic 5-blade shaver.
This is my 2nd Panasonic shaver, which is replacing my 10-year old 2-blade Panasonic shaver that still works, but has a battery that no longer holds a full charge. So far, I love my new 5-blade Panasonic electric shaver! Upon receipt, I charged the new shaver and took it with me on my 2- week work schedule. I used it 10 times in 14 days, and upon return home⦠it is still holding a 50% charge on the battery. Thatâs amazing!! ððThe shave is pretty quick and fairly close, and so Iâm happy with its performance. It is easy to hold, and I like the wet/dry option. There has been no âhair pullingâ discomfort. The only downside would be not being to use the shaver while it is plugged in or while charging. If it lasts for 10 years like my other Panasonic shaver, then it will be a GREAT value for money spent.

OMG!
I have to say this first; Braun makes a very good shaver. I have used Braun shavers for many years. This PANASONIC blows them away! I have been absolutely impressed with the closeness of this Panasonic shaver. The quality of the machine is impeccable. The machine is quieter than any other shaver Iâve used. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to charge. Holds a charge longer than I thought was possible. Before I shave, I use Electric Shave. Use this to make your facial hair stand out so the cutter has a smoother run going over those hairs. The pre shave has been around a long time, and makes using an electric shaver even better. This Panasonic shaver is a joy to use, and I would absolutely purchase another one tomorrow if needed.

Works well on my coarse facial hair. Takes about 5 minutes for a smooth shave. A little loud but effective. Easy to clean and use some oil on it once in a while.

Saludos
