Hi-tech concept, but awkward to use
Whatâs that – a teeth whitener for my yellowing British teeth? Works off your phone?! AND blue LED lights? Sign me up!I note this was $99 originally, which seemed ambitious – it then dropped I by two thirds to $33, and now seems to switch between those prices. I was very fortunate to get this at no cost, and if I was paying, I would consider $30, but not a hundred bucks. I thought the price slash was permanent, but apparently not.The package is attractive – everything fits neatly into a sturdy box, it all feels very polished. After a quick review of the instructions, I brushed on the serum and switched the light on. Itâs definitely bright, thanks to multiple LEDs. The serum comes in a âpenâ format and seems very thin; I felt like it didnât stay on teeth very long. Then I got a build-up of saliva, I felt like I had to be near a sink while using this so I could spit some out. It was difficult to tell but I think most of the serum was mixed in and lost down the sink! The Cheeky folks recommend 10 to 30 minutes but I never got past 15 – the mouthpiece is soft and comfortable, itâs just difficult to deal with the drool. The use of the phone as the power source is convenient – thereâs a micro USB plug with a USB C adapter so should work with most modern phones. I thought it would drain the battery more than it did – I think it loses about 3% in 15 minutes.I eventually switched to a whitening strip, plus the blue light, and that produced better results – all these products use some form of hydrogen peroxide that is enhanced with the blue light. With a strip, the gel is better contained so it can work longer. I moved about 2 shades up after using twice weekly, for about 3 weeks. Not a dramatic change, but I wasnât expecting professional results from a home-use kit. I probably could have seen better results if I had reduced tea/coffee consumption, to be fair. So, itâs moderately useful, undeniably cool-looking, just a bit of a hassle to use. Happy I was able to try it though!!!

Looks cooler than it is
I have tried a lot of tooth whitening products over the years from strips to trays to professional whitening molds. But, LED tooth whitening is new to me, and I was curious to see if it really provides better results. There are a lot of similar products on the market, but I chose this Cheeky one because I had the opportunity to try it for free in exchange for my honest review. I like that it is made by a small business in the U.S.The kit has a nice, simple design with some fun images and a “time to smile” message inside the lid. There are a variety of adapters to connect the device to your phone, and there was one that fit my Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G. I had a little trouble with the connection the first time, but I think you just need to make sure everything is securely plugged in.I reviewed the included manual and video online. However, when I painted the gel onto my teeth, I didn’t feel confident that I had used the right amount of gel. I had trouble telling if my teeth were properly coated since it foamed a little and made me want to drool and spit. Each of the times that I used this product, I needed to spit at some point, but one time I had a lot more trouble with the drooling and spitting from the beginning and throughout the process. No idea why, and I normally have little to no drooling with other whitening methods. The listing video says this is normal, but I have my doubts that this can be effective if the gel doesn’t stay in place and I don’t like the idea of swallowing all the chemicals. I also had to be careful not to touch my gums, because that caused a flash of very mild sensitivity. The light-up mouthpiece looks fun and didn’t bother my eyes. This is the most Instagrammable whitening method that I’ve used. But, like a lot of things you see online, this one appears cooler than it really is. You don’t see the behind the scenes drooling. The tray doesn’t feel comfortable while wearing. But, I didn’t experience any additional sensitivity.I could suffer a bit for fashion if this provided stunning results. But, I didn’t see a big difference, and I would say it’s more gentle than some strips I’ve tried recently. It whitened a little, but not more than other methods. Maybe because this is only meant to be used for 10-30 minutes, where strips stay on tightly for 30 minutes to an hour. The only benefit is that I didn’t notice any white spots, which I normally do when starting a whitening program, and the color of my teeth appeared to be a bit more even.Bottom Line: I think this product looks fun and cool. It’s a cute kit if you are interested in trying out LED whitening. But, for me, the discomfort outweighs the benefits. I think old school whitening methods are just as effective or even more effective than this.
