Just the Right Balance of Hold and Ease of Application
I have used the Aveda men’s grooming clay for years and recently moved to Highland because of some ads that said it was awesome. Turns out that that I was missing with Aveda was longevity. The Aveda product simply disappeared when I got hot, or it was very humid, or it rained a little. Basically any moisture would make it simply disappear. I wanted something with better hold, and I didn’t know until I tried something else. However, the Highland glacial clay is the polar opposite. It is made of wax and it is very sticky. Not only does it stay on your hair, but you have to rub it off your hands with a towel because soap and water have no effect on it. Also, I would pull out my hair when putting it on. Once I put it on my hair, my hair was flat and that was the way it stayed. It was simply too much. I was staring right down on the Goldilocks problem, so I did what everyone does in 2024, I conducted an online search, developed a list of candidates, and read reviews. I was stumped with several products, so I decided to buy the most popular one–Quicksand. This stuff is just right. It goes on pretty easily without pulling my hair out. Like Highland, you have to warm it up in your hands, but this is more clay and less wax. It lasts all day no matter the weather. It does not look slick, shiny, or greasy. Like the name implies, it leaves your hair dry looking. I put it on when my hair is barely damp. It makes my already thin hair a little flat at first. But over the morning, my hair rises to the desired look. Unlike Aveda or Highland, if the wind blows my hair, for example, I can run my hand through my hair without destroying the hold or the look. Sometimes when i first get up in the morning, my hair is like Doc Brown from Back to the Future, but all I have to do is push it back down and I’m good until I shower and start all over again. I don’t know what the “dry shampoo” thing is about, and I almost did not buy it because that was in the title. I would recommend that you give this a shot unless you want the slick or shiny look. See if you agree.

    Best for the beachy look
Fantastic quality. One jar lasts me about 5-6 months on medium-length hair. I tend to do messy styles, which this handles perfectly. It looks super natural, as if it were dried in the sun on a windy day after soaking in the ocean.

This is the hair product I’ve been looking for.
I was a little on the fence about ordering this product due to the mixed reviews and the cost, but I’m very glad I did.The texture of the stuff is smooth, yet has the smallest amount of graininess mixed in. I use a swatch about the size of a nickel and vigorously rub between my palms until it feels warm and the substance has dissipated—it almost feels like nothing is on your hands at that point, but it’s there. I then work my hands through my hair—usually dry—and immediately the hair groups together and becomes textured, but still feels dry to the touch, with no shine or greasiness. I’m then able to arrange my hair into the style I prefer, and it simply stays where I put it. A quick rinse of the hands with water and I’m done.Over the course of the day, gravity will of course make the hair settle a bit, but you can simply fluff it up again lightly with your fingers as needed (which isn’t often).I have straight, short/medium length hair, on the thicker side for reference. I usually used either Crew Matte Clay or Crew Fiber before finding this stuff. This product is better. Crew would eventually make the hair feel greasy, especially the next day. With Quicksand this doesn’t happen, and sometimes my hair actually looks better after a night of sleeping on it!It may not be for everyone, but if you want a decent, medium hold, zero shine, zero greasiness, that lasts all day, you’ve just found what you’re looking for.

    Excellent product, shipping was bad
The product is great – life changing even.It came really late and the lid was dented. If you want a new clay, definitely try this one (although maybe not from this seller).

    Love this product
I’ve got fine hair and have tried many hair styling products over the years with mixed results. This product adds fullness, body and texture without stiffness, shine, or noticeable residue. While it appears as a green paste, the color disappears as you rub the paste in your hands and then apply it to your hair. It offers great hold for hours and allows restyling if wind, clothes or hands move hair out of place. And a little goes a long way. This will be my go-to hair styling product for as long as it remains on the market.

    Very dry wax
Texture is very dry, not a bad thing, not like a puffy, sticky or cream product. Dry wax best way to describe. Little like a wood puddy type texture, or dry clay product.Did not get separation or definition that I hoped for, but held style even after wearing under motorcycle helmet, in Phoenix Arizona during summer heat-118*. Hair was damp after but still looked great and bounced right back into place with this product.I wear a choppy, just woke up, beachy style. Thick hairWas really impressed with its stay put all day styling ability. Most hair products can’t claim that one but this once can for sure. Oh and still washed out Easley just shampoo as normal to remove and removed clean.Still use alone with another product for my go to look

Excellent hair product for hold and volume
My go to hair product. As someone with very thin hair, this product is perfect to add volume. It holds up very well, probably wouldn’t hold for a full day, for a good 8 hours or so. I also don’t use very much with my short hair so this product really lasts a long time

It doesn’t feel nice or look nice whatsoever.
I’m really disappointed with the results this clay gave me. The texture it gives to my hair is nothing short of sandpaper. The hold is good, but personally this didn’t give me the look or feel or confidence I was hoping to get. I won’t be buying again and I would love to have my money back. Please save your money and invest in a different hair product or another one of hanz de fuko.

Hanz de Fuko Quicksand definitely feels like a premium product. The texture is dense and smooth, lacking the wet, heavy feel that often comes with clays or putties, and the added dry shampoo feature means your hair feels far less greasy than with similar products. That said, this isn’t a budget-friendly option, so you’ll need to decide if the price is worth it for you. It’s not the quickest styling product – if you’re after something easy to throw in and go, this might not be ideal. But if you want a firm hold, less shine, and that refreshing dry-shampoo effect, Quicksand is worth a look.

I have tried so many different pomades over the years, and they always follow the same principle of gluing hair together, despite being water-based. This stuff is one of a kind: it’s more like a powder (using a mineral compound made from the fossilised remains of tiny aquatic organisms!) and it doesn’t look or feel unnatural, but it does shape hair surprisingly well, even my semi-long, straight hair. Here’s a trick: wash hair, towel dry it, dry your hands, rub a small amount of Quicksand between hands, apply all over hair, then blow dry while brushing back. This will miraculously create volume that lasts. Reapply a little on the dry hair afterwards. Can be combined with texturising/volume powder, but honestly, at least in my case, this is all I need. Happy to see it at a good price on Amazon.

My hair: fine, straight, short-medium length, black. My style: Grade 3-5 on the sides and back. Varying lengths at the top (4-12 inches). Standing up when short. Swept back style when longer.Hanz de Fuko (Quicksand)Pros:- emulsifies quickly in the hands and applies to hair easily. Not tacky/sticky.- nice matte effect. Not greasy/shiny at all.- Gives strong hold with a ‘natural’ look.- I only need a small amount (half a fingernail sized) to get a good hold.- Applies well on towel-dried or dry hair. I hair-dry my hair then apply – this seems to give best styling effect.- Lasts most of the day (does lose hold a little with longer hair however).- Mould-able hair – can change/readjust style easily during the day without necessarily applying more product.- Washes out easily, no residue. I don’t feel I need to wash it out at the end of the day.Cons:- Cost. Not much in each pot (expensive per gram compared to other products). However (my opinion) worth the expense.- Gives hair a “sandy” texture (although some consider this a plus point?)- works well with short hair but not much else.- No real scent (smells like mud). Not unpleasant however.Overall, I think this product is great. I have purchased HDF quicksand 4 times in the last 4 years. It is my favourite amongst the HDF range and one of my favourites overall.
